01 — Cost

How much does a handyman cost in Halifax?

Handyman work is priced by time far more than by job. Most HRM handymen have a minimum call-out of about an hour, so a single ten-minute fix costs the same as a proper one. The economics reward bundling: list everything and book a half day. Every range below is confirmed in writing before work starts.

Ranges reviewed August 2026 · ranges, not quotes · the contractor's written quote is what you agree to pay.

JobTypical rangeUsual timingWhat moves the price
Minimum call-out (up to 1 hour)$80 – $1503–7 daysMost of this is travel and setup, not the fix
TV mount or shelving install$120 – $3003–7 daysWall type and whether the bracket is supplied
Door adjustment or lock replacement$120 – $3503–7 daysWhether the frame has shifted or just the hinges
Drywall patch and paint$150 – $5001–2 weeksPatch size and whether the wall colour can be matched
Deck board replacement$200 – $9001–3 weeksNumber of boards and whether the framing is sound
Half day (up to 4 hours)$280 – $5001–2 weeksBest value once you have three or more small jobs
Fence repair$250 – $1,2002–4 weeksPost condition and how much has to be dug out
Move-out punch list$300 – $1,5001–2 weeksLength of the list and the deposit deadline
Full day$500 – $9002–3 weeksMaterials usually billed separately at cost

A photo of the problem usually removes a whole round of back-and-forth.

02 — What to book

What is worth a handyman, and what is not?

Three buckets. The first one is not a handyman job at all — knowing the difference saves you a wasted call-out fee.

CALL A LICENSED TRADE

Not a handyman job

  • —Anything inside an electrical panel or a new circuit
  • —Moving or adding water supply and drain lines
  • —Gas appliances, venting or furnace work
  • —Structural framing or load-bearing walls

Post it as electrical, plumbing or HVAC instead — a handyman will only refer you on.

BOOK IT SOON

Small now, expensive later

  • —Failed caulking around a tub, window or exterior trim
  • —A door that no longer latches or seals
  • —Soft or springy deck boards
  • —A drywall crack that keeps reopening

These are cheap while they are small. Water damage is what makes them expensive.

BUNDLE IT

Save the list for one visit

  • —Flat-pack furniture and shelving
  • —TV mounts, blinds, curtain rails and mirrors
  • —Weatherstripping and draught-proofing before winter
  • —Move-out punch lists and deposit repairs

Three or more items and a half-day booking almost always costs less than separate visits.

03 — Why this exists

You deserve a handyman who turns up.

Small jobs are the hardest to get done. They are too minor for a contractor to quote, too fiddly to do yourself, and the person who was going to come Saturday has stopped replying.

We’re not a directory. We’re a local marketplace where the small stuff still gets a real booking and a real time window.

One request with the whole list. One visit. One quote in writing before anyone starts.

05 — Questions

Handyman work in Halifax, answered.

Yes — most HRM handymen bill a minimum of about an hour. A single small fix costs roughly the same as an hour of work, which is why bundling several jobs into one visit is much better value.

That is the ideal way to use it. List everything when you post — doors, shelves, patches, blinds — and it gets scheduled as a half or full day rather than a string of call-outs.

Work inside an electrical panel, new circuits, moving water supply or drain lines, and anything involving gas appliances or venting all require a licensed trade. Post those as electrical, plumbing or HVAC.

Either way works. If the handyman supplies them they are usually billed at cost on top of labour. Supplying your own is fine — just have everything on site before the booking starts.

BridgeTrade doesn't check insurance yet. Ask the handyman for proof of liability insurance before work starts. Contractor payouts go through Stripe, which verifies their identity and bank account.

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests. Send the landlord’s list or the inspection report with your job and give us the deposit deadline so it gets scheduled in time.

One to two weeks for most work, longer for outdoor jobs in spring and autumn when the queue builds up.

Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville and the surrounding communities. Share your postal code when you post and we will confirm coverage.

Yes. Include the address, tenant availability window and the full list of items. We coordinate scheduling directly with the tenant.

Not always. We focus on getting you booked with an available handyman. Say "multiple quotes" in your request if you want more than one option.

Not sure whether it is a handyman job or a licensed trade? Electrical, plumbing and gas work needs a licensed trade — post those under electrical, plumbing or HVAC.
